Where is my data stored?
All vehicle and expense data is stored locally on your device in a JSON database file. Nothing is sent to our servers. If you uninstall the App, your data is permanently deleted (unless you have an iOS backup).
How do I add a vehicle?
When you first launch GarageCoin, you'll be guided through adding your first vehicle. To add more vehicles later:
- Tap the ⚙️ Settings icon
- Scroll to "My Vehicles" section
- Tap "Add Vehicle"
- Fill in vehicle details (make, model, year, etc.)
- Tap "Done"
How do I add expense entries?
From the main screen:
- Tap the "+" button in the top right
- Select a category (Fuel, Maintenance, Insurance, Milestone, Other)
- Enter the amount (optional for Milestones)
- Choose a date
- Add odometer reading (optional but recommended)
- Add notes (optional)
- Tap "Done"
How do I edit an existing entry?
Simply tap on any log entry in the list to edit it. Make your changes and tap "Done" to save.
How do I delete an entry or vehicle?
To delete an entry: Swipe left on the entry in the main list and tap "Delete".
To delete a vehicle:
- Go to Settings → My Vehicles
- Swipe left on the vehicle
- Tap "Delete" and confirm
- Note: This will also delete all log entries for that vehicle.
Can I track multiple vehicles?
Yes! GarageCoin supports tracking expenses for multiple vehicles. Add as many vehicles as you need in Settings. Switch between vehicles using the picker at the top of the main screen (appears when you have 2+ vehicles).
How do I export my data?
To back up or share your data:
- Open Settings ⚙️
- Scroll to "Export & Import" section
- Tap "Export Data"
- Choose where to save the CSV file (iCloud Drive, AirDrop, email, etc.)
The exported CSV file includes all your vehicles and log entries.
How do I import data?
To restore or import data from a CSV file:
- Open Settings ⚙️
- Scroll to "Export & Import" section
- Tap "Import Data"
- Select your CSV file
- Review the import results
Note: The CSV must be in GarageCoin's format. Importing will not delete existing data — it will add to it.
What are Milestones?
Milestones are special entries for tracking memorable events or trips without an associated cost. Use them to mark:
- Road trips
- Major service completions
- Reaching mileage goals
- Any memorable moment with your vehicle
Milestones don't require an amount and won't affect your expense totals.
What expense categories are available?
GarageCoin includes these categories:
- Fuel ⛽ — Gas station fill-ups
- Maintenance 🔧 — Oil changes, tire rotations, scheduled service
- Insurance 📋 — Insurance premiums and payments
- Milestone 📍 — Memorable events (no cost required)
- Other ➕ — Parking, tolls, car washes, and miscellaneous expenses
How are statistics calculated?
Distance Traveled: Calculated from odometer readings (requires at least 2 entries with odometer values).
Category Totals: Sum of all expenses in each category for the displayed year.
Year Grouping: Entries are grouped by the year of the transaction date.
How do Maintenance Recommendations work?
GarageCoin can predict when your vehicle's next service is likely due. To generate a recommendation, the App sends your vehicle's make/model/year, current odometer reading, and maintenance log history (dates and categories of past entries) to our server via an external API. This data is used only to calculate the prediction — it is not stored or used for any other purpose. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Can I change the distance unit?
Yes! Go to Settings → Distance Measurement and choose between kilometers (km) or miles (mi). This affects how odometer readings and distances are displayed throughout the app.
Can I change the app theme?
Yes! Go to Settings → Appearance and choose:
- System — Follows your device's light/dark mode setting
- Light — Always use light mode
- Dark — Always use dark mode
What languages are supported?
GarageCoin supports 6 languages:
- English
- Română (Romanian)
- Русский (Russian)
- Deutsch (German)
- Español (Spanish)
- Français (French)
Change the language in Settings → Language.
Why should I track odometer readings?
While optional, odometer readings enable powerful features:
- Track total distance driven
- Calculate fuel consumption rates
- Monitor driving patterns
- Verify mileage for resale or insurance
We recommend adding odometer readings to every entry for best results.
Will I lose my data if I update the app?
No. App updates preserve all your data. Your vehicles and log entries are stored in your device's Documents directory, which persists across updates.
How do I back up my data?
There are several ways to protect your data:
- iCloud Backup: Enable iCloud Backup on your device (Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup). GarageCoin data is included automatically.
- iTunes/Finder Backup: Back up your device to your computer.
- CSV Export: Manually export data to CSV and save it to cloud storage.
Can I transfer my data to a new device?
Yes! Two methods:
Method 1 (Recommended): Restore from iCloud or iTunes backup when setting up your new device. GarageCoin data will be included.
Method 2:
- On old device: Export data as CSV
- Transfer CSV file to new device (AirDrop, email, cloud storage)
- On new device: Install GarageCoin and import the CSV
My expense totals seem wrong. What should I check?
Verify the following:
- Entries are assigned to the correct vehicle
- Dates are correct (entries are grouped by year)
- Amounts are entered correctly
- Categories are appropriate (Milestones with zero amount won't count)
Can I add receipts or photos?
Currently, GarageCoin focuses on text-based tracking for simplicity and performance. You can use the Notes field to record detailed information about each expense.
Is there a web version or sync across devices?
No. GarageCoin is designed as a privacy-focused, offline-first app. All data stays on your device. Use CSV export/import to manually transfer data between devices if needed.
💡 Pro Tip: Create a recurring reminder on your phone to log expenses weekly. Regular logging makes tracking easier and ensures you don't forget entries!
